    A TRIBUTE
    BY
    SARAH (KEY) McMURRY

The following is transcribed from a family history which was written by Sarah Elizabeth (Key) McMurry. She is the daughter of William Joseph Key. It was written as a tribute to Mrs. Delia Henry on her 58th Birthday on Sept. 16, 1977.
The families of Bill Key and of the Henrys were dear friends and neighbors.

'Bill' William J. Key was born in White Plains, South Carolina Nov. 15, 1876 into the family of Mr. & Mrs. Andrew J. and Sarah Elizabeth Elizabeth Key. He came to Texas along with his family in 1881 when he was five years old. They settled in Fannin County where they bought land, cleared the timber and built their home.

It was in this same place west of Leonard that he grew into manhood with all the work and hardships that the pioneer families had to endure. He was married to Lula Jane Sinor, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. George Sinor a pioneer family from Georgia. At the home of Perry Young, Sept. 24, 1899. To this union was born ten children. They were Berniece, Andrew W. "Bud", Beadie, Vonie, three baby boys died at birth, Sarah, Willie, and Hubert. All have deceased but Sarah McMurry, Leonard, Texas and Hubert Key Lubbock, Texas.

Bill Key was a farmer and reared his family west of Leonard with the exceptions of about three years they lived at Randolph where the little boys were born and buried. We attended church when possible at East Shady Grove Baptist and Blanton Chapel Methodist Churches. My parents were Methodist, Berniece, Bud
and Vonie were Baptist, Willie and Hubert were Methodist. After I married I obeyed the gospel of Christ and became a member of His Church - Willie and Hubert are also members of The Church of Christ. We attended the Hopewell School which grew from a one teacher to a three teacher school. After I finished
Leonard High School in 1927 I taught school for six years at Hopewell.

On Nov. 21 Beadie died at the age of 16 and was laid to rest in E. Shady Grove Cemetery. Then tragedy struck our family again. The following year, Grandpa Key died June 21, 1919 at the age of 66 years. Our mother, Lula Key, was taken July 28, 1919, at the age of 39 years. They both were buried in East Shady Grove Cemetery.

Grandma Key, the grand old soul that she was wanted Papa and the children to move into her home. That we did and lived with her and her sister-in-law, Aunt Ann Mangrum, for four years with all the adjustments we had to make.

Then we moved back to our old house on the hill where we lived when Mama died and where we first, to my knowledge became connected with the Henry Family. It seems that I've known Delia Henry all my life and I know she has me for she says she and Aunt Doll Evans came to see my mother and me right after I was
born. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Holt (Sallie Henry Holt) lived across the road from us and Mary Ella, their oldest daughter was my first and beat little girl friend. We played everyday so much that we got to talking and walking in our sleep until our mamas had to stop us.

When the Holts moved away Marion and Cordia Henry Carpenter moved into the house with her parents, grandma and grandpa Henry. They were our dear neighbors. That was back in the time when .we didn't go much and didn't have any close neighbors. We loved them very much and esteemed their friendship very highly through the years.

Then as time passed by and Papa began atending church regularly and taking Hubert, we became better acquainted and closer associated with the Hamilton "Bud" Henry Family. ' When the girls Lucille, Maureen, Ima and Ilene began their singing career with the help of their dad, Mr. Henry, they really kept Blanton Chapel on the move for some time.

Mr. Wren Henry, brother to Bud and Bill Key were very close friends. They spent many hours just visiting and whittling away the time.

In fact the Key Family have always counted the Henry generation as old and dear friends. The Olen Henry Family lived next door to Mac and I when their children and ours were young. In the more recent years, Mac and I have throughly enjoyed visiting in the home of G.W. and Lucille Todd and Delia. Bill Key and Edna Ladamer were married Feb. .6, 1936 at Celeste, Texas. They were accompanied by Dick and Cleo Price. They lived in the house just East of Grandma Keys and South of Hopewell, where we, Mac and I had been living with Papa, for several years. After he retired from farming in 1948 he and Edna moved to Leonard to the Hickman House in the West part of town. They lived there for a few years and bought a home across the railroad just Southwest of town. He enjoyed living there very much, and liked it too because he could walk to see
and liked to help around the house. His health was bad the last year or two of his life before his death July 31, 1962. He was buried in East Shady Grove Cemetery.

I found this letter to be most informative about Uncle Bill Key and his family. I trust that the members of his family will treasure these word for a long time.

One of Fannin's Early Native-Born Daughters, Dies

She first saw light in the Republic of Texas - Born 1844

In 1839 there came from Kentucky a colony of emigrants who settled in different sections of Fannin and Collin counties. The Hampton and Patton families located on sections where sparkling water gurgled from living springs, and John M. Patton stopped at the mouth of Bois d' Arc creek where he and his young family stayed till 1844, when they located at Patton Springs, where Randolph is now located, and where he ran a small store for many years.

Texas had just gained its independence when these families reached its uncharted domain and was still a republic when the headright was granted that described the metas and bounds of this new homestead. Their nearest neighbor was at Bonham, then a straggling village, protected by the blockhouse which afforded a rendezvous from marauding Indians. By a treaty the wild Red men were prohibited from trespassing on this territory, but then there were savage visitors who still felt that the settlers were intruders who deserved annihilation.

Two children had been born in the Patton household, one of whom had died in infancy, and shortly after the pioneer cottage was builtbally logs, and consisting of a single room, a daughter was born on December 30, 1844, who was christened Susannah Elizabeth. Her mother was a daughter of Charles Hampton and wife, co-settlers in this community, who a little later moved to Collin county, and settled on Pilot Grove creek.

This infant grew to maturity in this pioneer section, innocent of the advantages of present-day conveniences, but managed to secure the elements of an education, and being an inveterate reader she read every book on literature, history and kindred subjects that she could buy or borrow. The system of schools was as primitive as the section in which they were located, being supported by subscriptions. Her knowledge of early history was phoneminal, and her familiarity with the changes that occurred was remarkable.

In early life she joined the Cumberland Presbyterian church, and by 1881 she joined the Methodist church with her husband, and remained a consistent member till her death, always being a loyal supporter of its institutions and doctrines.

She was married to James R. Thacker, October 30, 1868, with whom she lived for forty-eight years, his death occurring December 2, 1916, exactly sixteen years before here death, which occurred December 2, 1932. She lived in Fannin county all her life, practically eighty-eight years, except one year in Collin county in 1871, and two years in Grayson county in 1881-2.

In her girlhood one of the pastimes of the young folks was horseback riding, and she was familiar with the forests and prairies where luxarious varieties of wild flowers dressed the summer with riotous colors. The highways were broken with uncoutly surfaces, and the chief methods of travel was by ox teams or on Spanish ponies.

Her eight-five years of life in this community had seen marvelous changes. She was among the first white children born in that section of the county. She was one of eleven children, ten of whom reached maturity. One brother, Charles Patton was a victium of the Civil War, and another Tom Patton, lived through the fratricidal conflict. A sister, Mrs Martha Kirk, died last spring at the age of eighty. She is survived by three brothers, N.B. Patton and L.K. Patton, at Randolph, and E.L. Patton of Duplex. Four sons and two duaghters, J.R. Thacker of Hamilton, B.W. Thacker of Hockley, E.O. Thacker of Houston and R.O. Thacker of Randolph, and Mrs. Cora Davenport of Kilgore and Miss Julia Thacker of Randolph, besides fourteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at Randolph Sunday afternoon by Rev. Bob Oates of Randolph and the pastor of the Methodist church at Balley. A duet was sung by Leroy and Lonnie D. Martin of Whitewright, four and six sears old, great grandnephews. Pallbearers were nephews, C.W. and Jess Leaver, Frank and Varna Patton and Adolph Gray of Randolph and Lowell Watson of Whitewright.

Among the out-of-town relatives present were, John R. Thacker of Hamilton, Glenn Thacker of Carter, Okla., E.O. Thacker and wife and Miss Mary Nester McCrosky of Houston, Dr. N.D. Hampton of Ector, H.U. Colvin of Elkins, Ark., D.C. Watson and wife, Lowell and Kellos Watson, Mrs. Clarence Martin and three sons, Leroy, Lonnie D. and Morris Ray of Whitewright, E. L. Patton of Duplex.

    Died:
    PASSING OF A PIONEER

In the death of A.J. Key, which occurred at his home four miles west of town late Saturday afternoon there passed from our midst one of the communities oldest citizens in point of years of residence, one who had lived an upright life among us for nearly forty years.

Andrew Jackson Key was born in South Carolina May 7, 1853, and died June 21, 1919, aged a little more than 66 years. He came to Texas in 1881 and had lived on the farm where he died since 1882. He possessed the true pioneer spirit, and set about to build for himself and family a home in what was then a veritable wilderness. In his younger days he was a man of extraordinary physical strength, and by reason of this fact exposed himself to more hardships than was good for his health. As a result his health had been failing many years, disease finally laying its' hand so heavily upon him that death came to his rescue. Besides his wife, to whom he was married before he came to Texas, he is survived by the following children: William, Charles, George, John, James, Frank, Pleas, all of whom live in this vicinity except Charles who lives in Oklahoma City, and James who resides near Kemp, Texas: Mrs. J.M. Blackwell, Leonard; Mrs. Geo. Kelly, Mansfield, Texas; Mrs. Lexie Sinor, Pryor, Okla.; Mrs. Dolly Evans, Leonard; Mrs. Anna Gaugh, Trenton.

Mr. Key was a member of the Methodist Church and the funeral was conducted by Rev. R.L. Keen of that denomination, burial taking place in the Shady Grove Cemetery at 3 o'clock. A man of sterling worth and undoubted integrity has passed to his reward, one whose example of industry and rugged honesty might well be emulated.

Andrew married Sarah Elizabeth Mangum on 5 Apr 1873 in South Carolina. Sarah (daughter of John Campbell Mangum and Dorcus Ann Cotton) was born on 29 Nov 1854 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina; died on 10 Oct 1947 in Leonard, Fannin County, Texas; was buried after 10 Oct 1947 in East Shady Grove Cemetery, West of Leonard, Fannin Co., Texas.
