245 DAVID MYERS DEAD
Passing of Another Old Soldier and Good, Cheerful Citizen
Funeral Services Held Today

Tuesday night at 10:15 o?clock death relieved David MYERS of his sufferings from rheumatism and heart trouble. He was a good man, always cheerful and apparently very happy. He had been in failing health for some time, and about one year ago moved into the property on West Mechanic Street, where he died. His farm place, three miles north of town, was in charge of his son-in-law, John KILLINGER.

The funeral was held at the Presbyterian church this forenoon, the services being conducted by J. A. SPENCER, minister of the Christian Church, assisted by Rev. WOOD, of the M. E. Church. Interment in Grandview Cemetery.

The following was prepared by a long-time friend of the family.

David MYERS, was born in Pennsylvania, January 10, 1843. With his parents he moved to Ohio, and at the age of ten years came to Worthington, near which place he lived on a farm.

In 1866, he married Miss Katherine BRANSTETTER, who resided near old Camp Ground, in Richland Township, and near which place they both resided until a year ago.

Besides his wife he leaves three children ? J. Wesley MYERS, of Wheatland; Mrs. Mattie FLATER, wife of John FLATER, of this place, and Mrs. Altona KILLINGER, of Washington Township.

The deceased had five brothers?Sam MYERS, Evansville; Jacob MYERS, Indianapolis; William, John and Eli MYERS, Worthington?and one sister, Mrs. Jennie MCCORMICK, Indianapolis.

Mr. MYERS was a brave soldier and served through many hard campaigns in the Civil war. He enlisted in the SEVENTY-FIRST [REGIMENT] Indiana VOLUNTEER INFANTRY in August 1862, and after serving nearly one year, was transferred to the SIXTH CAVALRY, and was mustered out of the service after the close of the war in Jun 1865. He participated in the battle of Richmond, Kentucky, and in many skirmishes round Nashville and in east Tennessee, and was in General Sherman?s famous march to Atlanta and the sea.

He was a member of the Church of God at Tulip for a few years, and in 1889 placed his letter in the C. P. congregation at Camp Ground, where he was made an elder and which position he occupied until his death. He was always an active church worker and superintendent of the Sunday school at Camp Ground for many years.

He was a holy man, a conscientious Christian in the truest sense of the work, always helping where he was most needed. He was kind and affectionate to his family and to all his neighbors and friends; cheerful at all times and having a simile and a kind word for everyone.

He loved life and expressed a desire to get out and do good, but was reconciled to God?s will and was ready when his time came.

246 David Newton Miller

David Newton Miller's ancestors were of the hardy pioneer
stock that played their part in the "winning of the West."
His grandfather, John Miller, was a native of Lebanon county,
Pennsylvania, who married Elinore Imboden, of his own
community, and came to Greene county, Indiana, where they
got partially improved land in Richland township. The old
log houses on the place when they went there soon gave way
to better buildings. He farmed and run a blacksmith shop
there. He was active in church work and helped build, in
1856, the building of the Church of God in that vicinity,
in which he was an elder and trustee. He married a second
time, his last wife being Mrs. Elizabeth Hubble, who died
April 15, 1902. His first wife died in 1865. He died in
1901. He had the following children by his first wife:
Henry, John, David, Mariah, Catherine, Caroline, Leah and
Mary.

The subject's father, John Miller, was born in Lebanon
county, Pennsylvania. He lived in Wayne county, Ohio,
and then came with his parents to Greene county, Indiana.
He married Sarah R. Miller, of the former county. She
was the daughter of Rev. Samuel and Hannah (Phillips)
Miller, both natives of Pennsylvania, who came to Greene
county about 1851 and located in Highland township, where
he preached in the Church of God and farmed, also taught
school. He was very useful and was highly esteemed
throughout the county. He died in 1872, followed to the
silent land by his wife in 1877. They had eight children,
namely: Susanna, who married Henry Miller, of Richland
township; Sarah R., the subject's mother; Eliza, who
married Floyd Allen; Anna, who married Oscar Allen; Mary,
who married William Buzzard; Margaret, who married C.P.
Molden; Elizabeth, who married Lafe Jessup; William H.,
who first married Ellen Knox, then married Ann Adams.
They live on the old home place in Highland township.

John Miller, the subject's father, stayed at home and
helped clear the farm and married soon after they settled
in Greene county, buying land in Richland township, which
he cleared, later trading this farm for four hundred and
forty-five acres in the same community. By hard work he
made the farm pay well and was able to buy property in
Bloomfield. He served as commissioner of Greene county,
Indiana, and was active as a Republican. He was a trustee
and an elder in the Church of God. He and his wife raised
nine children, having thirteen in all, namely: David N.,
the subject of this sketch; William P., a farmer near
Greencastle, Indiana; Hannah E., who married Henry Switz,
is now dead; Tabitha, deceased, who married Jacob Gray;
Mary Bell, who married John B. Lebitt, of Lyons, Indiana;
Susan, who married Grant Edwards, of Richland township;
Daisy, deceased, who was the wife of William Ritter;
Ethel, who married Allen Workman, of Richland township;
Oliver, who is a merchant and real estate dealer in
Worthington, Indiana.

David N. Miller was born November 23, 1854, in Richland
township. He went to the home schools and lived at home
until he married Florence R. Maddox, February 28, 1878.
She is a native of Monroe county, Indiana, and the
daughter of Thomas and Louisa G. Maddox, who came to
Greene county in 1870 and located in Richland township,
where he died. His widow survives. The subject and
wife have five children, namely: Nellie V., who married
Ivan Stalcup. She died June 27, 1902. They had three
children, George Dewey, Nona and Grace; Charles V. is a
farmer in Fair Play township; Edna V. married on March 4,
1900, William Huffman. They have two children, Mary and
Ilene. Frank is single and lives with the subject of
this sketch. Rex is also at home. After marrying
Mr. Miller bought a farm in Richland township, later
buying where he now lives. It is his grandfather Miller's
place and comprises one hundred and eighty-three acres,
one hundred and twenty-five of which are in cultivation.
He raises all kinds of grains and much stock. He was
proprietor of a store at Elmore, Indiana, for one year.
He is an active Republican in politics. He is an elder
and trustee in the Church of God and his friends are
many throughout the county where he lives.
