    • John McCoy Patton Obit:
      Randolph Dets

      Mark to the solemn bell,
      Mournfully pealling,
      What do its wailings tell,
      On the ear stealing?
      Seem they not thus to say,
      "Loved ones have passed away"
      Ashes with ashes lay!
      Oh, list to its pealing!

      With a heavy heart, and tear dimmed eyes, we call the above verse in all its fullness, which had almost faded from our memory. But the death of one of our most honored and perhaps the oldest inhabitant of Fannin County, brings back their vividness.

      Last week the reading of marriage rites -- this week, the funeral sermon. We see that the happenings of a day or days may put tears of sorrow in eyes sparkling with pleasure.

      This world is all a fleeting show.
      For man's illusion given;
      The simple joy, the tears of woe.
      --not sure on this line---
      There's nothing true but Heaven

      Yet tears of sorrow must fall; and this week they fall for Mr. John M. Patton, for fifty or more years, a resident of this county, whose spirit flew on seraph pisions to his empyreal home, beyond the reach of pain or sorrow, on Sunday night Jan 10. Just as the clocks were striking the midnight hour, and God's sacred and holy Sabbath was giving place to another new day, the spirit of the aged pioneer settler, passed away from this, to a hollier world, and in peace and perfect ease, his spirit flitted away from terrestrial, to celestial climes. He was born in Greenboro county, Virginia, July 1, 1809, moving from that state to Ohio when quite young. He was married int he state of Missouri, in the year 1839, to Miss S. J. Hampton, who survives him. He moved to Fannin county, Texas inthe year 1839, settling on Coffey Mill Creek, where he live two years. He then in 1841, moved to the upon which he died, and took up 320 acres of land, upon a part of which the lovely village of Randolph is situated. He was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church of which Rev. B. Cox, who preached his funeral, was for many years pastor.
      "There is no flock, however watched and tended,
      But one dead lamb is there;
      There is no fireside, howsoe'er defended
      But has one ??? chair"
      And the one who occupied, in this household, will be missed.
      He leaves a wife who has been with him for fifty two years, eight children, many grand children, and a host of warm hearted friends who mourn his demise.
